The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935 – The Hour Glass Limited Edition
The inspiration for The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935 can be traced back to 1935 when Longines filled an order by the U.S. Army Air Corps. Longines designed the original Longines Avigation Type A-7 for the Air Corps (predecessor to the U.S. Air Force), following the 1934 ‘Military Specification No. 27748'. Watches designed according to these stringent standards had to be precise, highly legible and easy to use. The Longines Avigation (a portmanteau of ‘Aerial Navigation’) fits the bill with its oversized case, blocky Arabic hour markers, easy to use mono-pusher chronograph and 40°-rotated dial. The tilted dial allowed pilots to easily read the time (and check elapsed time) without taking their hands off the plane’s control yoke.
The Air Corps was right in working with Longines. Since its inception in 1832, the brand has pioneered complicated watchmaking, especially in the area of chronograph watches. Like the original and the reissued Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935, Longines first chronograph movement (calibre 20H) from 1878 was a mono-pusher chronograph that used one pusher to start, stop and reset the timer. On the Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935, the mono-pusher is located atop an oversized onion crown at the 12 o’clock position (1:30, if the dial wasn’t angled). While not difficult to push, it requires enough force to prevent the user from accidentally activating the chronograph.
Our take on the Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935 is available with a blue or a sunray champagne dial, both housed within a 41 mm bronze case. Each case will patinate differently, according to the environment. Resulting in a unique expression of the passage of time.
